Dr. Driskell

We have spent the past two and half days with Doctor David Driskell. In the second lecture, Dr. Driskell shared his sketches from his travels around the world over the past several decades with us. It was also an honor to have Dr. Driskell view my sketches too.

This first week with everyone at IDSVA and the time spent with Dr. Driskell has been truly transformative. Being in the  presence of Dr. Driskell has been such an honor. His grace, humility, living history, spirituality, artist as philosopher presence has truly made a deep impression on everyone. Each of us said a few words to thank Dr. Driskell before his departure and many of us became very emotional. To me, he is like our artist grandfather, ‘Grandfather Driskell.’ As a teacher and as an artist, these same elements of Dr. Driskell’s life resonated with me.  In his parting speech to us, Dr. Driskell told us that the spiritual and emotional have been missing in academia. In choosing a program as unique as IDSVA, we made a good choice. Art in all of its forms has the power to transform. It is a deep responsibility.  The power of art to transform and connect is  through love and the spirit of generosity.

Happy Early Birthday Dr. Driskell from IDSVA!
