Circus Letterpress Collaboration with A Revolutionary Press

When I can squeeze it in, I have been working with John Vincent from A Revolutionary Press in New Haven, VT to do some letterpress printing. Here is recent collaboration between John Vincent and I. The elephant drawing is from my sketches from my earlier Shelburne Museum exhibit Papering The Town: Circus Posters in America. The first test print was hand-burnished with a wood spoon. Pantone purple and yellow inks were mixed and rolled onto the plate and printed on a Vandercook press. The sun was part of a second print through the Vandercook. Lastly, a few lines from Robert Lax’s Circus of Sun were printed on a Chandler and Price. We used a variety of Mohawk papers, including their Carnival series, in a coincidental link to the illustration that was inspired by the last performance of the elephants at Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus in 2016. I love these prints! There are multiple meanings to both the imagery and the text. What a great collaboration and I look forward to doing more in the future.
